New Delhi. : To commemorate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, which marks the birth anniversary of the revered Adivasi leader Birsa Munda, the Subject Association of the Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a panel discussion titled “Adivasi Women as Custodians of Culture and Sustainability.” The event highlighted the vital role of Adivasi women in preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainability. Dr Arvind Kumar, Student Advisor of the Subject Association, CSSI initiated the program by welcoming the Chief Guest for the event, Prof. Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar of JMI, the Chair Prof. Muslim Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, JMI and Prof Tanuja, Hony. Director CSSI who co-chaired chaired the event.
Esteemed speakers Dr. Gomti Bodra Hembrom and Dr. Purnima Kumari Oraon shared their perspectives on the crucial roles Adivasi women play in maintaining cultural continuity and environmental sustainability. They discussed how Adivasi women often serve as the custodians of traditional knowledge and are at the forefront of efforts to promote ecological balance and community well-being.
The event underscored JMI’s commitment to social inclusion and recognizing marginalized voices, aligning with the university’s dedication to promoting understanding and respect for diverse cultures. The Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion was proud to host this meaningful discussion, emphasizing the critical contributions of Adivasi women to the preservation and advancement of sustainable practices.
