JMI researchers bag all four IOP Publishing Top Cited Paper Award in Astronomy and Astrophysics category

New Delhi: It is a matter of great pride for the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) that UK based Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing, one of the world's top scientific publishing companies, has awarded the top cited paper award to JMI researchers led by Prof. Sushant Ghosh and his research scholars Rahul Kumar and Sahfqat Ul Islam. IOP has given awards to the researchers under the Astronomy and Astrophysics category for the team's four fundamental research papers on Black Hole. All four papers were published in 2020, two of which were cited over 100 times, while the others were about 80 times.

IOP is a UK-based learned society and professional body that works to advance physics education, research and application. It was founded in 1874 and has a worldwide membership of over 20,000. IOP Publishing is the publishing company of the IOP.

IOP Publishing usually awards only three papers from India each year in the Astronomy and Astrophysics category, but this year they have included four papers and JMI researchers authors all.

IOP present these awards to corresponding authors from India who are in the top one % of the most-cited articles published within IOP Publishing's portfolio of journals in the last three years (2019-2021)

JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar congratulated the team for the notable achievement and hoped that it would boost the morale of other researchers of the university to do high-quality research.

In his ongoing project, Prof. Ghosh, with his scholars Rahul Walia and Shafqat Ul Islam, has addressed some of the critical issues of black hole physics with his focus on theoretical and computational aspects. He is especially analysing gravitational lensing and black hole shadows with event horizon telescope results. The international community has received his work well. The research work is essential and of a high standard, leading to several highly cited publications in high-impact journals, including the four awarded by IOP.

The USIEF also awarded Rahul Walia Fulbright Post Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) at the University of Arizona. At the juncture, he is a PDF at the University of Kwazulu Natal, Durban while Shafqat Ul Islam is on the verge of submitting his PhD thesis.
