JMI organizes workshop on “Opportunities and Challenges in Sponsored Research"

Multidisciplinary Research and Commercialization- key to success for faculty members

 

 

New Delhi. : Multidisciplinary Research and Commercialization are key to success for faculty members, this was the take away from the one day workshop on the theme “Opportunities and Challenges in Sponsored Research” organized by the Faculty Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on 9th January 2023 for its 130+  faculty members.  The aim of the workshop was to encourage them towards research and innovation along with teaching. The Workshop was inaugurated by the JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhter, who encouraged faculty members towards sponsored research projects and spoke on its positive impact on overall growth of the university, its perception among stakeholders and fast track career promotion opportunities within and beyond the varsity.

 

Prof. Mini S. Thomas, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI, introduced the objectives of the workshop and emphasized that faculty members should submit more research proposals to the prospective funding agencies and help in creating as well as strengthening the research infrastructure of the faculty and also for their personal growth.

 

Guest of Honour of the workshop Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, former Chairman, NBA reiterated that for continuous knowledge upgradation research is inevitable and ‘research attitude’ plays a major role rather than funding.

 

Dignitaries from  the government funding agencies,  Dr. Pratishtha Pandey, from DST, Dr. Sunita Verma, from MeitY, Dr. S. K. Dwivedi, from DRDO, and Dr. Anil Kumar, from MNRE, discussed various schemes and thrust areas where project proposals by individuals and group of faculty members as well as institutions can be submitted for funding.  They also highlighted on the attributes of a good project proposal, which can get potential funding.

 

Prof. Ram Gopal Rao, Former Director, IIT Delhi, appreciated the potential of JMI to excel in research and emphasized that research should lead to commercialization of innovative ideas. He stressed that this can lead to more startups emerging from universities like JMI. He cautioned against the fear of failure and was of the view that only more proposals submission, with clearly defined objectives and deliverables, can result in higher success rate and bring in more funds for research.

 

Panel session of the workshop, coordinated by Prof. Zishan H. Khan, witnessed enthusiastic interaction between the curious faculty members with the panelists Prof. Ram Gopal Rao, Prof. Mini S. Thomas, Prof. Zahid Ashraf, Prof. Mukesh Ranjan.  

 

The workshop ended with a vote of thanks by Prof. Ikbal Ali, Coordinator of the Sponsored Research Coordination Committee of   Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI.
