JMI organizes Two Day Research Methodology Workshop

The aim of the workshop was to understand the methods and procedures of data collection and data analysis

 

New Delhi. : The Department of Sociology, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) organized a two-day Research Methodology Workshop on 2nd and 3rd February 2023 in a hybrid mode. The aim of the workshop was to understand the methods and procedures of data collection and data analysis by a way of illustration and demonstration of research works of the resource persons.

The workshop began with a welcome address by the Head of the Department, Prof. Manisha T. Pandey who emphasised on the importance of good research methodology and its benefits for research scholars’ works. The workshop had four sessions with four resource persons from different universities in Delhi.

The first session was conducted on “Textual Analysis” by Prof. Gitanjali Chawla, Professor of English at Maharaja Agrasen College, University of Delhi. In her audio-visual presentation, she drew references and gave illustrations with the support of her case studies of select folk songs of Punjab. Her examples of Bhangra and Jugni were well-received by the audience.

The second session of the workshop was conducted by Prof. Arul Selvan, Director of the School of Journalism and New Media Studies at IGNOU, New Delhi. The topic for the presentation and interaction was “Content Analysis: Tools and Techniques”. Alongside a preliminary demonstration of the use of “R” software, he emphasised on the need to introduce technical tools for extracting information from online sources. He used the social media platform of Twitter to give demonstrations for the same.

The third session was conducted on 03rd February by Prof. Mahuya Bandyopadhyay, Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi on “Doing Ethnography”. She enlightened the audience about the concepts of participation, observation, immersion, listening, sensorial engagement, bracketing own beliefs, detailing and recording of field notes to explain how to do ethnography. She cited references of her own research work on prisons and field experience to elucidate the same.

The last session of the Research Methodology Workshop was conducted by Dr. Divya Vaid, CSSS, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Dr. Vaid emphasised on the significance of quantitative analysis in social sciences and illustrated the same by drawing reference from her work on social mobility. She suggested useful reading materials to the scholars for quantitative analysis prior to opening the floor for discussion. 

Each captivating session of the workshop was followed by an intense and interactive session with questions posed by the scholars and faculty members. The workshop was streamed live on Facebook and was attended by the faculty members, scholars and students of various departments of the university and many alumni members (online). It concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Ph.D. coordinator, Prof. Kulwinder Kaur. The workshop was stimulating, productive and an enriching experience for all.
