JMI organizes National Workshop on “R Programming for Social Science Research and Data Analytics”

:- “JMI is taking the lead in bridging the gap between theoretical and empirical knowledge through constant technological upgradation” Pronab Sen, Former Chief Statistician of India

 

New Delhi: The Department of Economics, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has organized a National Workshop (Online) on “R Programming for Social Science Research and Data Analytics” under the aegis of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Department during 16-17, September 2022. The inaugural function of the event was blessed by the gracious presence of JMI Vice Chancellor Prof.  Najma Akthar who was the Chief Guest and Dr Pronab Sen, a distinguished researcher at International Growth Centre (IGC), London and former Chief Statistician of India graced the occasion as the keynote speaker.

Prof Asheref Illiyan, Head, Department of Economics welcomed the guests and announced that the R programming workshop is the maiden programme under the Golden Jubilee and 10 more programmes will be held under the banner of Golden Jubilee Celebrations stretching over next three months.

The Vice-Chancellor in her address reminded us that JMI has been constantly growing with flying colors in achieving the most cherished educational aims and ideals of the nation. She proudly announced that it has emerged as the 3rd  top-ranked university in the country and obtained the highest grade of A++ in NACC.

Prof. Akthar congratulated the department on organizing the workshop which is of great use to the social scientist, and data analysts. She remarked that the diverse background and affiliation of resource persons as well as participants who hail from different parts of the country would lead the university to be an advocate of technological upgradation of tools and techniques in conducting research and data analytics solutions.

The keynote speaker Dr Pronab Sen reiterated the importance of statistical and econometric software for the researchers and policymakers to make informed decisions, conclusions and inferences for academic research and policy evaluation. This is essential for constant and continuous upgradation of empirical estimation strategies for solving complex issues of socio-economic problems. The use of language programming, linear programming, and simultaneous equations has got wider applicability and utilization among researchers and policymakers.

Dr Sen while congratulated the department for organizing such workshops and emphasized the need for different predictive modelling scenarios and empirical estimations of the most beneficial and cost-effective policy options. He complimented Jamia for taking the lead in bridging the gap between theoretical and empirical knowledge through constant technological upgradation.

Prof Moonis Shakeel introduced the Chief Guest and keynote speaker and Prof. B. Srinivasu proposed a vote of thanks in the inaugural function.

The workshop was stretched over 8 technical sessions and attended by more than 90 participants across the disciplines and different parts of India. The participants were taught from the basics of R Programming to an advanced level by eminent resource persons invited from reputed institutions in the country. The workshop provides hands-on training in R and its use in social science research and also a scope for food for thought on different data sources like NSSO, IHDS, and NFHS.
