JMI organises online workshop on Low Vision Impairment Awareness

 

 

New Delhi. : A one-day online workshop on low vision impairment awareness was organized by the Department of Education, Training and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) on 5 February 2022 through. The program was organised to increase awareness and sensitization about the issue. The month of February is celebrated internationally as the month of low vision awareness.  

In the inaugural session, Course Coordinator Dr. Faizullah Khan along with the Head of the Department and teachers of the department welcomed the experts on the topic. Program Coordinator Mr. Saurabh Ray emphasized on the purpose and process of the workshop.  Professor Dr. Naheed Zahoor, Head of the Department congratulated on the success of the program.  

In the first session of the workshop, Dr. Sonia Srivastava, Chief of Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital, highlighted the eye problems which are responsible for different vision impairments.  Giving priority to cleanliness, health and regular check-up, she emphasized on the development of healthy eyes in a conscious society.

In the second session, Dr. Naseem Akhtar Chief Optometrist Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital discussed such measures in which optical and non-optical equipment was present, emphasizing on the availability of equipment while clarifying government guidelines.  He also stressed on introduction of newly manufactured smart glasses by IIT Bangalore in 2021 which will be beneficial for low vision impaired.

 

In the third session, Dr. Adhya Shakti Roy, Head of the Department of Visual Impairment, Dr. Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University, Lucknow, in its presentation, explained the process of teaching students with low vision in detail. She also discussed such measures in which the low vision is impaired in both offline and online medium so that education can be accessible.

In the concluding session, Course Coordinator Dr. Mohammad Faizullah Khan welcomed everyone and congratulated them for achieving the objectives of the workshop.  The participants presented their positive and encouraging thoughts.Mr. Saurabh Rai, Program coordinator, in his presentation, told that the workshop was organised on Google Meet for students and teachers of the department and was  live streamed on Facebook on YouTube to increase awareness and sensitivity.  Dr. Adhya Shakti Rai, the guest of the concluding program, congratulated the students as well as the program organizing committee for the successful program.
