JMI organises Model United Nations, 2023 "War is a failure of Diplomacy”

The MUN Conference was organised by the Department of Economics, JMI in collaboration with University Placement Cell (UPC).

 

New Delhi. : Students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised a two-day Model United Nations, 2023 on 11th and 12th February, 2023. Students from various schools, colleges, and universities as delegates had the perfect opportunity to put into action the art of having anyone and everyone work their way.

The MUN Conference was organised by the Department of Economics, JMI in collaboration with University Placement Cell (UPC). The MUN began with the Jamia tarana. Prof. Ashraf Illiyan, HoD, Department of Economics, Prof. Rahela Farooqui, Director, UPC, , Prof. Saba Khan, Deputy Director, UPC, Prof. Moonis Shakeel, Deputy Director, UPC and faculty in- charge, Dr. Vasim Akram and Dr. Aas Mohammad graced the inaugural session.

The Chief Guest, Colonel Ali Ahmed, a freelance blogger, an infantryman and an academic with over 850 published articles and 8 years of experience in the UN peacekeeping mission had bestowed the participants with his gracious presence and insightful thoughts. Colonel Ali highlighted the significance of MUN to the audience through which delegates can learn about Diplomacy, International Relations and United Nations.

The Core Secretariat was formed by JMI students from various departments. Gaurav Chakraborty, Director General, Abdullah Aftab, Secretary General and Amber, President of JMI MUN 2023.

The programme had committees on UNSC (United Nations Security Council), NSC (National Security Council), UNGA (United Nations General Assembly), UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Commission), AIPPM (All India Political Party Meet), and IP (International Press). In the context of India assuming the presidency of G20, a special committee on G20 was also organised.

The two-day JMI MUN covered issues of national and international importance. Ranging from the grave situation on the Sino-Indian border, the growing role of the media and the influence of student politics, threats caused by the development of AI (Artificial Intelligence), safeguarding the rights of children dragged into armies, risk mitigation for pandemic preparedness, and the formulation of a coordinated action plan for the rehabilitation of nations that suffer in natural calamities etc.

Prof. Asheref Illiyan, HOD, Department of Economics, JMI, in the closing ceremony, appreciated the commendable work of the organising committee. He also thanked Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor and Prof. Nazim Husaain Jafri, Registrar of JMI for extending necessary support for the smooth organisation of the program. At the end, Chief Guest, Colonel Ali Ahmed read out the UN charter and preamble of Indian Constitution and requested the gathering to follow it in letter and spirit.
