New Delhi, : To commemorate the first anniversary of the successful lunar landing of Chandrayaan-3 on August 23, 2023, India will celebrate its inaugural National Space Day. This day honours the nation’s remarkable achievements in space exploration and inspires future advancements in space technology. To celebrate this day, the Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised a set of activities on the theme “Touching lives while touching the moon: India’s Space Saga” on August 12, 2024.
The undergraduate and diploma students of the department indulged in activities like poster making and quiz on the theme of India’s success in space. Tabassum of B.Ed. General 2nd year emerged as the winner of the poster making competition; Ashad Ansari and Shifa, of B.Ed. General 2nd year secured the second and third positions respectively. Followed by this, quiz competition constituting Disha Sharma B.Ed. Nursery, Nida Zuber B.Ed. General, Sadiya D.El.Ed. were given consolation prizes for quiz competition.
10 teams named Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Neptune and Moon participated in the event consisting of 3 participants each. Team Earth - Shahbaj Ahmad, Rahul Singh and Nadeem emerged to be the winner of the Quiz competition. Team Saturn- Subia Gulzar, Osama and Mohd. Nadir from B.Ed General were the runners-up for the quiz competition. 5 students who gave correct answers to the passed on quiz questions were also given prizes. Certificates of Participation were distributed to all other participants.
After the competition all students gathered in the New Hall of IASE to celebrate the occasion. The celebration started with Qirat by Mr. Abdullah, B.Ed. General 2nd year of IASE followed by Ms. Shaista Tanweer, a PhD Scholar of IASE welcomed the guests with saplings. Dr. Aerum Khan, Associate Professor of Science Education, IASE set the tone of the occasion by her presentation depicting the timeline of India’s growth in Space technology from 1960 to 2024.
Judge of the events Dr. Sameer Babu Associate Professor, Department of Educational Studies highlighted the importance of organising these events at the university level especially in the teachers training department and how as future teachers, students of B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. can gain values and skills that can be carried with them into the classroom. Dr. Jawaid Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Studies discussed the posters made by the students on the theme India’s Space Saga and congratulated students for the originality of ideas depicted in some of the posters.
Prof. Jessy Abraham,, Head of Department IASE, remembering APJ Abdul Kalam, narrated some beautiful life stories of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. She appreciated coordinator of the event Dr. Aerum Khan and all the organising team who worked really hard to make this event successful. Prof. Sara Begum, Dean Faculty of Education addressed the gathering by congratulating all the participants and the organisers. She remarked that it was ages ago when we used to say, “Chanda Mama Dur Ke”, but as India has progressed in space exploration and reached the south pole of the moon we should all be proud of it and celebrate this achievement.
After that the result was announced and prizes were distributed to the students. The celebration concluded with a special Vote of Thanks by Research Scholar Ms. Samra Jamal. The Space Day event was a resounding success and thoroughly enjoyable. Attendees engaged in various informative and entertaining activities, celebrating the achievements in space exploration with enthusiasm. The well organised event left participants with a deeper appreciation for the significance of the day, making it a memorable and impactful experience for all involved.

The organising team comprised scholars from the Faculty of Education, including Ms. Ambrin Khanam, Ms. Sadiya Shaheen, Ms. Shaista Tanweer, Mr. Nisar Ahmad, Ms. Soumya Panigrahi, Ms. Mansi Sharma, Mr. Hassan Ahmad, Ms. Samra Jamal, Mr. Md. Ashique Husain and Mr. Taj Mohammad along with the faculty members Dr Aysha and Ms Nazneen Fatima.
