New Delhi – The Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies (CJNS) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized an Extension Lecture on the theme “Development in Indian Culture: Perception and Process” on August 6, 2025, bringing together eminent scholars, faculty, and research students to explore the historical and intellectual contours of Indian culture.
The event was held under the leadership of Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor, JMI, and Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI. The session was chaired by Prof. Bharti Sharma, Honorary Director, CJNS, while the lecture was convened by Dr. Etee Bahadur, Assistant Professor at the Centre.
Prof. Jigar Mohammed, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Head of the Department of History, University of Jammu, delivered the keynote address. In his lecture, he identified creativity, productivity, and freedom of expression as key dimensions of cultural development. He emphasized the knowledge-based foundation of Indian culture, underlining the importance of critical thinking and intellectual traditions in India’s cultural evolution.
Prof. Mohammed also revisited the contributions of key ideologues of the Indian National Movement, who shaped modern India’s inclusive development vision through cultural, intellectual, and socio-political frameworks.
The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty and research scholars across various departments of JMI. The lecture began with a welcome address by Kapil Yadav, Research Scholar at CJNS, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Azka Ali Khan, Research Scholar, CJNS.
In her concluding remarks, Prof. Bharti Sharma praised the lecture’s clarity and depth, and reflected on the relevance of cultural understanding in contemporary academic discourse. The session concluded with a lively Q\&A, providing attendees an opportunity to engage directly with the speaker
