DELHI : In a major push to modernise public education, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood has announced a comprehensive five-year plan to upgrade government schools across the national capital. At an orientation session held at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Chirag Delhi, Sood outlined an ambitious roadmap to introduce artificial intelligence-powered smart classrooms, computer labs, and language learning facilities.
The initiative, backed by a ₹900 crore budget, will see the rollout of 5,000 AI-enabled smart classrooms by the end of 2025, along with 100 upgraded ICT labs and 450 new language laboratories. These facilities will include interactive smart panels, digital learning aids, and multilingual tools supporting both English and regional languages.
“We are building the foundation for the future. Technology, infrastructure, and active parental engagement will drive this transformation,” said Sood, addressing parents of nursery to Class 1 students. He emphasised the importance of student safety and encouraged families to actively engage with schools.
- Modelled on Gujarat’s Success, Focused on Equity
The plan draws inspiration from Gujarat’s digital classroom model, which has already seen the deployment of over 1.1 lakh smart classrooms. Delhi aims to replicate this success, particularly in underserved regions such as Najafgarh, Narela, Seemapuri, and Kirari.
- STEM, Startups, and Foundational Learning
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Delhi is introducing entrepreneurship education for Classes 7–12 under the NEEEV initiative. The programme will include practical workshops and innovation challenges to build problem-solving and startup skills.
Sood also reiterated the government’s dedication to foundational literacy and numeracy through the NIPUN Bharat mission. AI-assisted teaching and personalised remedial support will help bridge learning gaps, particularly for first-generation learners, with the goal of making every Delhi school NIPUN-certified.
- Rebuilding Trust in Public Education
Highlighting the legacy of Delhi government schools in producing accomplished professionals, Sood urged parents to shed outdated views about public education. “Don’t underestimate government schools,” he said, encouraging continued parental involvement.
He also outlined scholarship opportunities for SC, ST, and meritorious students, and acknowledged the dedication of teachers who volunteer during summer breaks to run remedial classes.
- Community Engagement and Green Initiatives
The orientation event concluded with a symbolic tree plantation drive, underscoring the long-term commitment to nurturing both students and school environments. Sood thanked parents for their trust and called for stronger school-community partnerships moving forward.
With this comprehensive vision, Delhi’s public school system is set for a bold transformation—making equitable, future-ready education a reality for all children.
