New Delhi. : Five exceptional Indian students have been selected as Rhodes Scholars-Elect for 2025, after a rigorous application process involving two rounds of preliminary interviews and a final assessment. The prestigious scholarship will enable them to pursue fully funded postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford starting in October 2025.
About the Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1903, is the world’s oldest and most esteemed graduate fellowship. Open to students globally, it aims to identify young individuals with exceptional academic achievements, leadership qualities, and a commitment to addressing global challenges. Each year, five students from India are selected for this opportunity, a tradition that began in 1947.
The selection process involves a detailed application review and a final interview conducted by a committee of experts and leaders across various disciplines. The next round of applications, for the 2026 batch, will open in June 2025.
The Scholars and Their Journeys
Rayan Chakrabarti
- Education: Master’s in Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU); BA in Literature, St. Stephen’s College.
- Interests: Memory studies, critical heritage, and anthropology. At Oxford, Rayan plans to create an archive and museum focused on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact in South Asia.
- Other Pursuits: Trained pianist; writer and translator of politically themed poetry.
Vibha Swaminathan
- Education: Final-year LLB (Hons), National Law School, Bangalore; BA in Political Science, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
- Interests: Examining the political and legal vulnerabilities in citizenship regimes and pursuing human rights litigation in India’s trial courts.
Avanish Vats
- Education: BA in Philosophy, St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
- Achievements: Research on accessibility in education and healthcare for disabled individuals in Jharkhand. Avanish is the third visually impaired scholar-elect from India.
- Other Pursuits: Tabla player; filmmaker; advocate for accessible philosophy.
Shubham Narwal
- Education: Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly.
- Interests: Conservation strategies for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard; MSc in Clinical Embryology at Oxford.
- Other Pursuits: Passion for nature conservation; basketball enthusiast; Harry Potter fan.
Pal Aggarwal
- Education: Final-year BTech in Engineering Physics, IIT Bombay.
- Interests: High-energy astrophysics; aims to become an astronaut and promote women in science.
- Other Pursuits: Trained in Bharatnatyam and contemporary dance.
