New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) will conduct a second mop-up admission round in physical mode to fill vacant undergraduate (UG) seats. The decision was taken during the university’s Executive Council (EC) meeting on Friday, which also approved uniform PhD guidelines and resolved to confer an honorary doctorate on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, an alumna of Hindu College.
Over 9,000 UG Seats Still Vacant
- During the EC meeting, members raised concerns over the large number of unfilled UG seats.
- More than 9,000 UG seats remain vacant across North Campus and peripheral colleges.
- Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh suggested an open mop-up round to give students another opportunity for spot admissions.
- The EC authorised him to frame the admission policy for this round.
Standardised Guidelines for PhD Courses
- The EC also approved a proposal to bring uniformity in PhD programmes across departments from the 2025–26 academic session.
- PhD coursework will carry 12–16 credits.
Core components will include:
- 4 credits in research methodology/advanced methodology
- 2 credits in research publication ethics
- 2 credits in research tools
- 4 credits in discipline-specific electives
The university said the move was necessary to address variations in course formats across different subjects.
Honorary Doctorate for Sri Lankan PM
In a symbolic move, the EC also resolved to confer an honorary doctorate on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, who is a graduate of Hindu College.
