Delhi University’s Ambitious Plans: Satellite Launch, Free Lunch for Students, and 'University Haat'

DU aims to develop a satellite system that will support scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation, and remote education

New Delhi. : Delhi University (DU) has unveiled a series of visionary initiatives as part of its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) 2024, which outlines the university’s long-term objectives. Among the most ambitious goals are plans to launch its own satellite, introduce a free lunch program for underprivileged students, and create a 'University Haat' to showcase student innovations.

As part of its drive toward innovation, DU aims to develop a satellite system that will support scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation, and remote education. If financial constraints arise, the university may consider collaborating with organizations like ISRO to make this project a reality.

In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, DU plans to phase out fossil fuel vehicles and transition to electric vehicles on campus, starting with Chhatra Marg. This initiative is aligned with the university’s goal of achieving zero-emission status in the near future.

Another significant project is the introduction of a free lunch scheme for underprivileged students. This initiative, which will offer free meals in exchange for work at the university’s cafeterias, aims to alleviate food insecurity while maintaining high food safety standards. DU plans to collaborate with self-help groups for food procurement to support local communities.

Additionally, DU is exploring the creation of a ‘University Haat’, modeled after similar setups in international universities. This commercial space will showcase and sell products developed by student-led start-ups, tapping into the university's large community of nearly six lakh people.

Other long-term goals outlined in the IDP include establishing a ‘University Alumni Angel Network’, where alumni can mentor and financially support student start-ups, and creating reverse internships, allowing students to hire industry professionals. DU also plans to establish special research Chairs funded by multinational companies to further promote academic-industry collaboration.

These initiatives are currently under consideration by the university’s Academic Council, which met recently to review the proposals.
