New Delhi.: In a strong response to growing complaints from parents, the Delhi Government has launched a crackdown on private, unaided schools arbitrarily increasing fees—some by 25–30% post-COVID—placing a heavy burden on middle- and lower-income families.
Key Actions Taken:
On-Ground Inspections:
- District magistrate-led teams are actively inspecting schools based on parental complaints. Several schools have already been scrutinized.
Strict Legal Action:
Schools found violating the Delhi School Education Act & Rules, 1973 may face:
- Suspension or withdrawal of recognition
- Even a possible government takeover of their management
Financial Audits Ordered:
- Senior finance officials are auditing school accounts to identify unjustified fee hikes.
Safeguards for EWS Students:
A dedicated nodal officer will handle grievances regarding:
- Denial of books or uniforms
- Discriminatory practices in admissions
Uniform & Books Guidelines:
- Schools cannot force parents to purchase books/uniforms from specific vendors
- Uniform designs cannot be changed more than once in 3 years
Pending Fee Hike Court Cases:
- The Directorate is pushing for speedy resolution of court cases involving fee hikes to ensure timely justice for affected families.
Budget Boost:
- The DoE reaffirmed its commitment to equitable education by promising a budget allocation of Rs 2,000 crore for FY 2025–26.
Govt Warning to Schools:
- Private schools engaging in arbitrary fee hikes will face strictest legal consequences, the DoE warned.
The Delhi Government remains firm in its stand to protect students' rights and ensure affordable, inclusive, and quality education for all.
