NEW DELHI: In a major move to align school education with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and NCFSE 2023, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of a new curriculum: ‘Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ for Classes 3 to 8, effective from the 2026-27 academic session.

The initiative aims to move beyond rote learning, focusing instead on logical thinking, systematic problem-solving, and the ethical application of AI. To ensure successful implementation, CBSE has designated "Computational Thinking and Understanding AI" as the primary training theme for teachers in the current session.

Empowering Educators through Structured Training

The Board has outlined a comprehensive teacher-capacity building plan consisting of three main activities:

  • District Level Deliberations (Workshops): Offline workshops organized by schools or Sahodaya Clusters to share best practices.
  • Expert-Led Talks: Specialized sessions (online or offline) featuring internal or external AI experts to provide deep-dive insights.
  • Regional Workshops: Board-conducted orientations via Centres of Excellence (CoEs) with a nominal registration fee.

Key Sub-themes of the Curriculum:

  • Foundations of CT and AI Readiness.
  • Mathematics as the cornerstone of AI.
  • Interdisciplinary connections across Middle Stage subjects.
  • Ethics and Responsible use of AI.

Teachers participating in these activities will earn Continuous Professional Development (CPD) credits, ranging from 3 to 6 hours. By integrating CT and AI across subjects like Mathematics, Science, and Languages, CBSE aims to create a "future-ready" learning environment that prepares students for the challenges of the 21st-century workplace.
