Bengaluru: Due to the overcrowding both inside and outside the campus of Mount Carmel College on Independence Day, traffic snarls were caused on the busy road outside the college.

The Bengaluru police have initiated an action against the college by accusing the authorities of organising Independence Day “without taking permission” and unnecessarily causing traffic jams on August 15. According to the Suo motu complaint, the High Grounds Police booked the principal and management of the Mount Carmel College (MCC), on charges for creating public nuisance.

An FIR was filed by Sachin SO, Sub Inspector attached to the High Grounds police station based on Suo moto complaint. As per the FIR, the police were informed that the college had gathered around 8,000 people for the event that included UG and PUC students. The attendees had crowded outside the college and parked their vehicles on the road that led to traffic snarls on the already busy road. It was also found that around 10,000 tickets were distributed to the students and were encouraged to sell them to other college students as well. There was no permission granted to Mount Carmel College to conduct Independence Day event, the FIR added.

The unexpected crowd that gathered in front of the college gate started creating unnecessary nuisance as they were denied entry without the tickets. The college has been booked under sections 290(public nuisance) and 291(continue to create public nuisance) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police sought action against the MCC management, the principals of the PU and degree colleges, and those who were responsible for organising the event.
