Global Universities in India: UGC Approves 3 Out of 50 Applicants

Over 50 foreign universities have applied for UGC approval.

New Delhi. : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted approval to only three foreign universities out of more than 50 applicants seeking to establish campuses in India. Despite the strong interest, the strict approval process has raised questions about the future of global institutions in the country.

Foreign Universities in India – Key Highlights

  • Over 50 foreign universities have applied for UGC approval.
  • Only three institutions have received the green light so far.
  • UGC’s rigorous selection criteria impact the establishment of global campuses.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed that discussions are ongoing with several overseas institutions interested in setting up campuses in India. He emphasized that this initiative aims to provide Indian students with international-level education within the country, reducing the need to study abroad.

Currently, around 14-15 lakh Indian students pursue higher education overseas, leading to a significant outflow of funds. To address this, the UGC has revised regulations to enable foreign universities to establish their presence in India.

Pradhan also stated that negotiations are in progress with more than 50 reputed foreign institutions, with approvals being granted based on strict assessment criteria. He assured that once operational, these universities would enjoy academic autonomy while adhering to India’s educational standards.

On concerns about regulatory compliance, Pradhan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and enforcing strict rules against violations.

This move aligns with India’s broader vision to enhance research opportunities and expand access to quality education, ensuring that Indian students receive world-class academic exposure without leaving the country.
