Prof. Devang V Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay and Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay was the Chief guest and speaker for the occasion
ROORKEE : The department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Roorkee and Dean-Resources and Alumni affairs today jointly hosted Prof. JB Lal Memorial Lecture 2018 in the memory of its Founding Head, Prof. JB Lal.
Delivering the key note address, Prof. Devang V Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay and Prof. at Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay said, “It gives me immense pleasure to be invited here to honor Prof. JB Lal who served IIT Roorkee as its Founding Head, Department of Chemical Engineering from 1966 – 1969 during which he undertook many important researches. He always encouraged his students to ask questions and learn from each other."
He further added, "One should observe behaviours in actual experiments so as to understand and develop realistic theories. Young researchers need to be patient and energetic in doing research.”
The lecture was on the subject of "Granular materials". Over the last three decades there has been a renewed interest in understanding granular materials and considerable progress has been made with contributions from the physics, engineering and mathematics communities of researchers. In the lecture, the phenomena related to rheology and segregation in granular flows was reviewed.
Prof. Devang V Khakhar did his B. Tech from IIT Delhi in (1981) and PhD from University of Massachussets, Amherst in 1986 both in Chemical Engineering. He is world renowned authority in the field of granular materials with multiple publications and patents. Prof. Khakhar is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies. He has been awarded Amar Dyechem Award and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for excellence in research among many others.
