Professor Neelam Sangwan of CUH selected for National Academy of Sciences Fellow

Mahendergarh : Prof. Neelam Sangwan, Head, Department of Biochemistry, Central University of Haryana, has been elected as a Fellow of the esteemed science academy “National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) in the year 2021.Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. R.C. Kuhad (Former fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India) congratulated Prof. Neelam Sangwan and expressing happiness on this achievement.

Prof. Sangwan is recognized for her outstanding contributions in the area of Medicinal and Aromatic plants. She has published several internationally reputed publications and filed patents based on the research on these plants. Her research is focused upon on the traditional ayurvedic plants such as Ashwagnadha, Brahmi, and Tulsi to know about its natural drug products and how these are synthesized by the plants. The natural metabolites from medicinal plant produce bioactive which are highly desired for their therapeutic effects by several medicinal/herbal preparation. Her studies have enriched knowledge which is helpful in improving plants with better and higher medicinal and aroma ingredients through modern techniques such as NGS, functional genomics, biotechnological improvements and metabolic engineering. Besides research, Prof. Sangwan is connected with social outreach programs of the academies for the benefit society specifically of children and women through science. She has been honored earlier with awards and achievements by National science academies. This year, NASI has elected her as fellow of the esteemed academy.

National Academy of Sciences, India is the oldest Science Academy of the country, established in the year 1930 by a group of world-famous scientists led by Prof. Meghnad Saha (the Founder President). Presently, Prof. G. Padmanaban, former Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the President, NASI. The National Academy of Sciences, India is one of three prestigious National Science Academies, is also recognized by the DSIR, Ministry of Science & Technology, GoI. The Academy (NASI) has established many fruitful collaborations with the scientific bodies of national & international repute to pursue its activities as per its mandate- 'Science & Society'; through its Fellowship & Membership, spread all across the country.
