Delhi Govt Invites Proposals For 'Happiness Curriculum'


Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister, Shri Manish Sisodia had announced in February that the Delhi government plans to introduce a new course in the next academic session, named 'Happiness'. The course will be introduced for Classes Nursery to 8.

The Government on Friday invited proposals from organizations, universities and individuals for a partnership with the Directorate of Education, for developing an activity-based Curriculum for the new subject. The proposals can be sent on by 15th March 2018. The Directorate will invite select entries to participate in a national level workshop that will be held towards the end of March.

Making the announcement, Shri Sisodia said, "At a time when our neighbour Bhutan is formulating its policies to ensure a high Happiness Index for its citizens, by building an activity-based Happiness Curriculum for children studying in our schools, we can not only help enhance their personality but also influence the direction in which we are heading as a society and nation. 'Mindfulness', well-being, self-awareness are concepts that should be introduced to children at an early age to ensure long-term mental and physical health for all."

Delhi’s Government schools have seen a remarkable turnaround in the last three years. Not only has there been a transformation in infrastructure and capacity, but there has been a serious effort to improve learning outcomes through various interventions. This reform process cannot be carried on merely for achieving higher learning outcomes in literacy, math, science and other subjects. Education has to serve a larger moral and societal purpose and cannot be looked at in isolation from the needs of society. Even as we aim for economic equality, we must also strive for 'happiness equality'.

Education is meant to create happy, confident and content human beings, who can in-turn play a meaningful role in society. The curriculum will include components that will instil self-awareness and care, reduce stress and anxiety, help manage depression, build ability to focus on education and work, encourage creative and critical thinking. Such a holistic approach to education will result in building healthy minds of our children that will enable them to lead a happy life.
